Plankton are foundational to aquatic ecosystems, and characterizing them—including type, abundance, size, shape, and distribution—helps capture complex ecosystem changes. The reality, though, is that not one single technique can describe all these characteristics, so researchers combine multiple techniques, some of which serve multiple functions, to answer complex ecological questions.
For example, flow imaging microscopy (FIM) provides particle-level data including images, concentration, size, and shape. These data complement techniques like eDNA metabarcoding, artificial intelligence, fluorometry, cytometry, and remote sensing.
The workshop, geared towards those new to FIM, will feature a FlowCam introduction with a live demonstration and a variety of examples from users describing the role FlowCam plays in their analytical workflows along the freshwater to marine continuum.
