pyrodinium bahamense flowcam

This sample was collected by an ASLO 2019 attendee and brought to our booth for analysis at the show. The sample came from Bioluminescent Bay in Puerto Rico.  The gray spiky critters are Pyrodinium bahamense, which produce a great deal of bioluminescence.  The other dominate critter in the collage is Cochlodinium spp.  Note that both dinoflagellates are toxin producers.

Top FlowCam Cyanobacteria Papers

coverHAB season is fast approaching. The FlowCam has proven useful in HAB trending and bloom prediction.

Our ability to predict and prevent harmful algal blooms is directly related to our ability to study and understand cyanobacteria.  Numerous studies have used the FlowCam to rapidly enumerate, image, and aid in the identification of harmful algae present in water samples to better track, trend and predict blooms. We've collected our favorite studies on cyanobacteria into one document .

Download our Top FlowCam for Cyanobacteria studies which features synopses of our favorite recently published papers.

A Small Price to Pay to Prevent a Fish Kill

Grieg Seafood HeroSalmon farms are at risk of major fish kills when harmful algae are present, sometimes costing the farm $800 million in damages. Grieg Seafood, one of the world's largest salmon aquaculture companies, has found the FlowCam to be a useful tool in monitoring harmful algae and keeping their fish stock healthy.  (Photo credit: Grieg Seafood)

"An Integrated Approach" Gains More Traction

Texas h2o AWWA cover

Previously featured in AWWA's OpFlow December issue, the "integrated approach" developed by the City of Wichita Falls for drinking water management has now also been featured in AWWA Texas H2O March issue.

This article contains images of Anabaena captured by the FlowCam during the algae bloom of June 2016, along with graphs showing corresponding elevated levels of geosmin during the same period.

Kay JohnsonTwo members of our Technical Customer Support team recently traveled to Asia in support of our customers and distributors. Kay Johnson, Technical Customer Support Manager, visited and trained a biopharmaceutical customer in Seoul, South Korea with our local representative Sam Bo Scientific. She then went to Osaka, Japan with Am Lab, Inc., our partners in Japan, to lead a 2-day FlowCam Training at Kanso Co. LTD, a regional engineering company. They plan to use the FlowCam to analyze meiobenthic organisms. The recently published paper by Kitashi et al. (2018) prompted this Japanese group to purchase a FlowCam with a color camera.  Read more from Kay's travel log.

Stephen Barton cropped- headshotStephen Barton, Technical Customer Support Associate, traveled to Singapore; Tamil Nadu, India; and Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. In India, Stephen accompanied our local partner Spitzen Analytica to the aquatic sciences department of Annamalai University.
